Timms seals it after Brakes up the pace in the second half

Team: Day; Thompson, Walker, Sidwell, Rowland, Burgess (Adams); Timms, Webb (Hanrahan), Shearsby; Agar, Nicholls (Blake)

Two fine second half strikes by Brian Agar and Darren Timms sealed victory for Leamington against a strong and determined Nuneaton Griff side, although it took Leamington until the 54th minute to make the procession pay.

Steve Thompson saw his free-kick headed just wide by Paul Nicholls in the 8th minute, but the visitors always looked dangerous on the counter-attack with Myles Day being forced into a fine reflex save from Steve Rathbone on 18 minutes. Nuneaton Griff continued to have their chances as Liam Bailey on the left wing found Rathbone whose glancing header went just wide of the far post on 24 minutes.

But as both sides continued to match each other Paul Nicholls saw his 22 yard effort go straight into the chest of Dave Wright in the vistors' goal. Lee Bateman for the visitors was lucky not to be booked for up-rooting Thompson on the right wing. From the resulting Mark Rowland free-kick, Glen Webb just failed to connect with his header at the far post. Leamington continued to have their chances. A nice flick inside the penalty area from Nicholls found Barry Shearsby who blasted wide of the target from 12 yards out. On 44 minutes, only the outstretched boot of Bateman in the Nuneaton defence prevented Shearsby latching onto Nicholls's cross. The first half finished goal-less.

Leamington opened the goal-scoring on 54 minutes when Brian Agar hit the ball home low into the net from 6 yards out following a Nicholls cross from the left wing after a well-won ball. Still the visitors continued to battle away, and Gary Shaw forced Day into a fine low save at the near post following a strike from just inside the area.

Leamington doubled their lead on 73 minutes when they won a free-kick on the right after a mistake by a defender who up-rooted Nicholls. From the corner-line Shearsby sent in an inch perfect cross which Timms rose to meet with a downward header which went through the crowded penalty area and left Wright helpless in the visitors goal.

On 76 minutes Nicholls was stretchered off following an awkward fall with knee/hamstring damage and was replaced by Josh Blake. The referee awarded Leamington a penalty after 79 minutes when Agar blasted the ball against the arm of Richard Willett. Timms stepped up, but his casual approach saw Wright make an easy save, diving low to his right hand-side. Timms's spot-kick lacked power and direction.

A well-won ball by substitute Ben Adams ahead of Darren Wright in the Griff defence in the 85th minute saw Blake just fail to connect with the cross. Another fine Leamington victory sets them up for next week's FA Vase tie away to Mickleover Sports. Today's crowd witnessed an enjoyable and entertaining game on a breezy afternoon in South Warwickshire.
