Woodford United 0-0 Leamington (5-4 on pens)
by Simesy (03/08/02)

Attendance: 200

Team: Sidhu; Thompson, Rowland, Crabtree, Dix, Burgess (Wickson); Webb (Hanrahan), Shearsby (Bahi); Timms, Nicholls, Blake

Two evenly matched teams fought out an often dreary 90 minutes between thundery showers.

Leamington once again paired Crabtree and Rowland in central defence, and both had a good game. After some average performances, Sidhu was untroubled for the whole game, the only piece of action being when Woodford hit the post in the second half.

Blake started his first game back after his holiday, and is still not yet match-sharp, although his pace did cause some problems with the opposition defence.

Leamington had two chances to score in the final 20 minutes after two goal-line skirmishes resulted in the ball being cleared by an at times ragged Woodford defence.

It came as no surprise that there were no goals in the 90 minutes of open play, and it was to be settled on a penalty shoot out. Most fans would quite fancy their chances with Morris between the sticks, but Sidhu is still a novice at this level.

Timms cracked the first penalty home, and Woodford equalised. Then Webb stepped up and slipped as he struck the ball, sending it wide of the left post. Woodford converted their remaining four to advance to tomorrow's final.

In truth, Sidhu should have done better with Woodford's third and fourth penalties, as both actually went straight down the middle and through his legs.

In the earlier match, an understrength Banbury team struggled to beat Hook Town 7-6 on penalties.
