A brighter day greeted the few Brakes fans who made the journey to Spencer Stadium for this 3rd/4th Place play-off, and witnessed probably the most exciting match of the tournament.

Leamington's cause was not much helped by the fact no regular goalkeeper could make the match, leaving Shearsby to make his second appearance in goal this year.

Despite this, Brakes enjoyed good periods of play, with Jag Bahi and Steve Thompson making good use of the wings, but all too often the opposing defence managed to get a foot in to stop the cross.

The first goal wasn't long in coming. Inside quarter of an hour, a far-post cross from the left saw Shearsby leaden-footed as a Hook player leapt to head in and put them one up.

On the half hour, the lead was doubled as Shearsby raced out towards the edge of the area to close down an attacker who calmly took it round him and buried it into the corner.

Between times, Paul Nicholls had a very good shout for a penalty, as he was brought down just inside the area and about to bear down on goal. Leamington survived the rest of the half without conceding a third.

Ten minutes after the restart, Hook made it 3-0 and wrapped the match up, again with a header.

On 73 minutes, after a short but sustained attack on the opposition goal, Leamington believed they had forced an indirect free-kick when a defender passed the ball back to his keeper from six yards out, but the referee waved play on.

Leamington did get the consolation goal they deserved after 80 minutes. Paul Nicholls raced through onto a pass inside the left edge of the area, had a quick look up and slotted it inside the near post after wrong-footing the goalkeeper.

The drama didn't end there, as on 85 minutes, Burgess headed a good effort of the line. Mysteriously, the referee awarded a goal, despite no apparent claims by anyone on the pitch.

The final of the inaugural Ruth Elwell Tournament saw Banbury United pip Woodford United 1-0, scoring in the final minute.
